Is your Beef & Lamb grass fed or grain fed?
All our livestock are raised on the pastures at Eden Park. We regularly rotate them through different paddocks to ensure they have fresh, nutritious feed at all times. We supplement their feed with minerals and molasses, or hay from time to time if needed. We do not systematically feed our cattle grain to help them ‘finish’ as some do, as our priority is to raise our livestock on grass, just as nature intended.
How much do you charge and how many kilos per box?
We sell our lamb for $16/kg and our beef for $18/kg. This is based on the “dressed weight” price. You’ll find this is incredible value when you consider you pay far more at major grocery stores, for often tasteless and poor-quality meat of unknown origins.
All our animals differ slightly in size and therefore we can’t guarantee an exact weight for each box of Beef or Lamb. As a guideline however, we base the boxes on these approximate figures:
Box |
Weight |
Cost |
Half Lamb |
10-12kgs |
$160-192 |
Whole Lamb |
20-24kgs |
$320- 384 |
Eighth Beef |
25-35kgs |
$450-630 |
Quarter Beef |
50-75kgs |
$900-1350 |
Half Beef |
100-150kgs |
$1800-2700 |
Whole Beef |
200- 250kgs |
$3600- 4500 |
We require a deposit to secure your order. Around one week prior to delivery, the butcher will confirm the dressed weights with us and we will invoice you for the remainder, less the deposit, depending on what portion of the animal you have ordered.
What cuts of meat will I get in my box?
Depending on the portion of meat you have ordered, each box will include a mix of the following:
Lamb Boxes: Leg chops/roasts, shoulder chops/roasts, loin chops/rack or cutlets, ribs, neck chops, and shanks. The heart, liver, kidney, tongue are also available for any whole lamb purchases should you wish to utilise these highly nutritious parts of the animal.
Beef Boxes: T-bone/sirloin, eye fillet, rump, round, topside, silverside, gravy beef, blade, oyster blade, chuck, spareribs, brisket, rib fillet, mince, sausages, soup bones & dog bones. The heart, liver, kidney, tongue, cheek & tail are also available should you wish to utilise these highly nutritious parts of the animal. Please specify on your order form and we can allocate to your order, if available.
Beef boxes also come with the option to specify ‘more mince than sausages’, ‘more sausages than mince’ or ½ mince ½ sausages.
Why are your prices so reasonable?
We are able to keep costs down because we eliminate the need for the ‘middle men’. We raise our livestock from birth and take direct to the butcher, cutting out sale yard commissions, multiple trucking costs, time in feed lots etc.
We are able to keep costs down because we are local. Our farm and the areas we are servicing are close by and means you the customer are not paying inflated prices to cover transporting costs from interstate farms and feed lots to your local major grocery store.
We are able to keep costs down because we are smaller scale farm, with smaller running costs. We manage the daily operations and administration of our business largely by ourselves or by our small and dedicated team. We intentionally run small herds which allow us to better manage our pastures and therefore avoid the extra costs of having to bring in additional feed.
We are able to keep costs down because we sell direct to the public. We don’t process meat in bulk and only when an animal has been fully allocated to paying customers. We deliver fresh and have no onsite storage facilities so don’t have to on-charge onsite freezing or storage costs to the customer.
Do you sell custom boxes?
At Eden Park Farm we only sell percentage cuts of a whole lamb or cow. We do this because we want to minimise waste, offer the whole animal not just ‘fashionable’ cuts of meat, and encourage the nose to tail eating philosophy to honour the animal’s life. We regularly post recipe ideas on our social media pages to show just how easy, nutritious, economical and tasty it is to cook with all parts of your beef or lamb box order.
What is the difference between “dressed weight” and “take home weight”?
When buying in bulk, it’s important to understand the different weight measures that are used to determine the cost of your Beef and/or Lamb. It is different to how you would purchase from a grocery store.
“Dressed weight” is the weight of an animal immediately after its head, hooves, hide and internal organs are removed. It includes the bones. It is the weight we the farmers are charged by the butcher for processing and packaging the animal. It is slightly different to the “take home weight” (which is the amount of produce you actually receive in your box.)
After slaughter and dressing, the carcass is hung and aged for between 7-10 days which is a process which helps tenderise and bring out the flavours within the meat. During this process there is some moisture content lost which, along with the removal of unusable bones and excess fat prior to packaging, results in the “take home weight” of your beef or lamb box being slightly less than the ‘dressed weight’ on which you are charged.
For example, if you order an Eighth Beef Box with a dressed weight of 35kgs, you will be charged $630, less deposit ($18/kg x 35kgs). You will receive slightly less than 35kgs of meat cuts however, reflecting the percentage loss attributed to the dry aging process, removal of unusable bones and excess fat.
Rest assured buying in bulk, direct from the farm is still by far the most economical way to purchase meat. You the customer still receive all the fully useable and delicious produce from the eighth of the animal (or whatever portion of beef/lamb you ordered). And it means we the farmer are able to cover our processing costs, as does the butcher. Win win win!
When is your next delivery?
We generally process our beef on a quarterly basis throughout the year and our lambs seasonally. We find this is the perfect amount of time for buying meat in bulk, as it allows people to enjoy their Eden Park produce and empty out their freezers over a 12-week period, ready for their next home delivery of fresh, grassfed meat.
